Living Abroad and Feeling Like Something Needs to Change? Start Here.
I’ve interviewed women who have a “great” job.
Some have a high position in a multinational company. One is a successful entrepreneur. Many are also wives and mothers. On paper, you could say they have it all. They’ve shown resilience by moving to a new country and not only surviving there, but also achieving what many would call the dream job.
I’ve also interviewed women who have moved abroad but haven’t landed the perfect job yet—or don’t have a job yet.
From the outside, it would be easy to say the second group are the unlucky ones. The ones who are struggling.
Well, yes and no…
What I’ve heard through these interviews is that even the women who look successful on paper have their own struggles. Yes, they may not struggle financially. But surprisingly, some of them do not feel fulfilled in their current job. We often assume that once you have a good-paying job, you will automatically feel fulfilled. These women confirmed that this isn’t always the case.
And this is where it gets interesting: the second group may not realize they could be closer to the first group than they think. Not in terms of money or title—but in the deeper feeling of “something is missing.”
For both groups, this season of not working full-time yet, or not being in their dream job yet, may actually be the perfect time to work on the fundamentals.
Both groups have their own problems. Different kinds of problems, yes. But still problems. Different kinds of fear, yes. But still fear.
For one woman, the fear may be not having enough financial stability yet. For another, the fear may be leaving the safety of a regular monthly paycheck. One may feel behind. Another may feel trapped. But both can feel disconnected from themselves and unsure how to move toward a career and life that feels truly fulfilling.
When I say fundamentals, I don’t only mean whether a future job can make money. Of course that matters. But we can go much deeper than that. Have you ever thought of:
What kind of work would make you wake up feeling motivated (not just obligated)?
What kind of work would make you feel you’re here for something bigger than ticking boxes?
What kind of work would value your multicultural identity—and support a life that includes motherhood and the emotional weight of living abroad?
A fulfilling career is never just about title, money, or the socially accepted version of success. It’s also about having peace of mind, feeling aligned with your true self, feeling like you finally belong, and being able to build relationships that last.
Unfortunately, when you are overwhelmed, disconnected from yourself, doubting your worth, and struggling to express who you are in a new environment, career clarity becomes much harder to access. I deeply believe that we cannot find our fulfilling career when our body is in survival mode.
That is why The Women Abroad Reset is built as a step-by-step journey. Not because women abroad face only one challenge, but because the same woman is often carrying multiple layers at once.
If you’re living abroad and you know something needs to change—but you’re not sure what yet—these 4 steps will help you find calm, clarity, and a path that fits.
Step 1: How to Find Peace of Mind When Life Feels Like a Race
The first challenge is often overwhelm.
You may be juggling work, responsibilities, family life, and the invisible mental load of adapting to life abroad. You know you are tired, but you may not fully see what is draining your energy. You can feel disconnected from your body, stuck in constant pressure, and unsure how to slow down without falling behind.
This step helps you understand what is draining your energy and where you are out of balance. You begin reconnecting with your body’s signals and learning mind-body tools you can use anytime to feel calmer and more grounded.
By the end of this step, you start creating more space to breathe. You also begin setting healthier boundaries, saying no with less guilt, and reclaiming some of your time and energy so deeper change becomes possible.
Step 2: From Self-Doubt to Self-Trust
Once there is a little more space, you’re ready for the deeper work.
Many women abroad are stuck in a loop of comparing themselves to others, questioning their value, and feeling like they are not good enough. Even when they have experience, strengths, and real potential, they struggle to trust their own decisions.
This step helps you rediscover hidden strengths, values, and parts of your multicultural identity that may have been overlooked. You start understanding the fears and patterns that keep you stuck, and you build a clearer inner foundation.
By the end of this step, you have a clear, simple framework to make more confident decisions. Instead of constantly looking for external validation, you begin trusting yourself and moving forward with more clarity and self-worth.
Step 3: Find Your Voice in a New Language and Culture
Confidence is deeply shaped by language and culture.
The challenge isn’t just vocabulary or grammar—it’s the feeling that you can’t fully show your personality, intelligence, or ideas the way you want to. When you’re navigating a new culture, it’s easy to overthink your accent, second-guess your words, and hold back in social or professional moments.
In this step, we work on both the inner and the practical: how you relate to your accent and self-expression, and the communication skills you need to feel more confident in everyday life abroad.
By the end of this step, language and culture feel less like barriers—and more like a bridge that helps you connect, belong, and be seen.
Step 4: Clarify and Launch Your Fulfilling Career
If you’re still reading up to this point, you probably know your current job isn’t the right job.
When you are calmer, more connected to yourself, and more confident in how you express who you are, you are finally in a stronger place to look at your career.
This step helps you get clear on what fulfills you, what you are good at, and what matters most to you. You explore career options that fit your strengths and values, validate your ideas, and create a realistic plan that also takes your financial concerns into account.
By the end of this step, you are no longer just dreaming about a different career. You are taking concrete first steps to turn your vision into real-world action.
